This course is a survey of the development of the Christian Church from the close of the New Testament period to the Reformation period. Emphasis will be placed on the origins of traditions, creeds, heresies, and confessions as well as the theological, cultural, and political forces that shaped Christianity. Students will examine key historical figures, critical doctrinal developments, and the institutional evolution of the church. The goal is to cultivate an appreciation for the church’s diverse history while identifying the relevance of past developments to contemporary ministry and theological reflection.

  • Identify and articulate the major doctrinal developments and their historical contexts.
  • Evaluate the contributions of key leaders and theologians throughout church history.

  • Demonstrate a maturing Christian experience through integration of historical and biblical understanding.
